The relationship of Czech customers to domestic retail chains has changed dramatically. While just a few years ago they had the impression that they were buying bargain goods at various events, and often high-quality ones, today they already know which one is the best. Supermarkets in the Czech Republic are among the worst in Europe in terms of quality and simultaneously also among the most expensive.
It works even without discounts
“Today I definitely finished shopping in Czech supermarkets. We will only go to Germany for food and we will get fresh bread here at the bakery. I’m really not in the mood for him to buy things from Agrofert here or something that nobody wants in the west,” says Mr. Jaroslav, who has already gone shopping to our neighbors several times and, according to him, it is completely incomparable.
He was also in Poland, but he was not so impressed by the offer there, even though it is cheaper there. “I don’t need to save so much, I’m mainly interested in quality, which is incomparably higher in Germany. I also did a price comparison and found that even though I buy much better stuff, I still save about 15%,” says a customer who, on the one hand, is happy to have this option, as he lives approximately thirty kilometers from the border, but on the other hand, he is annoyed by the way retail chains and food manufacturers behave in our country.
More and more people are making a similar choice, whether they go to Germany or Poland for shopping. Customers have simply had enough. “Now I know how it is here with our discounts. There is a 50% discount on toilet paper every now and then, but in Germany it is cheaper even without a promotion. And what if you don’t get the discount, they will shave you. Same with washing powder, coffee and other items,” says Mr. Jaroslav.
Changes must come
The truth is that the revelation about discount events in the Czech Republic was very unpleasant. Today it is already an open secret that it is done only by eye. The normal prices of the assortment are artificially increased, and then discounts are given, but they often do not reach the level of normal prices in Germany or Poland.

In short, it makes sense to simply go out for a big purchase to the neighbors once every ten to a fortnight, because it’s not only about the price, but also about the quality. Those are already two strong arguments. And the more people do it, the bigger the signal they send to local shops. They will eventually either have to close or adapt and improve the offer.
