The Ukrainian army says it has managed to push Russian soldiers 3-8 kilometers away from the Dnieper river on the front line in the southeast of the country.
It is the first time in a long time that progress has been reported after months of deadlocked fronts in connection with the Ukrainian counter-offensive.
– Preliminary information varies from 3 to 8 kilometers depending on the geography and landscape on the left bank of the river, says defense spokesperson Natalia Gumenjuk to Ukrainian television on Sunday.

She does not state whether Ukrainian soldiers have taken control of the areas, or whether the Russians have only withdrawn.
Tens of thousands of opponents
She estimates that tens of thousands of Russian soldiers are on the other side of the river.
– Enemies continue to fire artillery from the right bank of the river. We have a lot of work left, she says.
The Dnieper River, which runs from north to south in the country, has become one of the most important front lines in the war.
Last year, Ukrainian forces managed to push Russian forces back across the river in Kherson county in the south, but the Russians have continued to attack Ukrainian towns and villages from the east side of the river.
Little progress
For over a year, Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have held positions on opposite sides of the river. Ukrainian forces have made a number of attempts to cross the river.
The Ukrainian counter-offensive was launched in June last year, but for the Ukrainians it has led to disappointingly little progress in the attempt to recapture Russian-occupied areas.
Ukraine has only recaptured a small number of villages in the south and east. The last time Ukraine claimed a victory in the offensive was when Ukrainian forces recaptured the village of Robotyne in Zaporizhzhya County in August.
