Vaccination for older adults during the cold season is crucial as it provides the necessary protection against infectious diseases that threaten this vulnerable group. This was highlighted by Carolina Bernal López, geriatrician and member of the Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics of Aguascalientes.
The specialist emphasized that vaccines are a fundamental tool to protect the health of older adults, offering defense against various diseases. Among the recommended vaccines for older adults over 65 years of age are:
Influenza vaccine. Its annual application is recommended for all people from 6 months of age. It is crucial to prevent serious complications that influenza can cause in older adults. Pneumococcal Vaccine. It offers protection against pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections. It helps stop the spread of bacteria, providing a comprehensive defense. Vaccine against COVID-19. It can prevent the contraction of COVID-19 and reduce the risk of serious or fatal illness. Triple vaccine or Tdap. One dose of the Tdap vaccine should be given routinely at age 11 or 12, with a booster recommended every 10 years. It offers essential protection against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, diseases that can cause respiratory problems.
TO MEASURE. Older adults are encouraged to discuss their specific vaccination needs with their doctors, recognizing the importance of a personalized approach.
In a direct appeal to the community, Bernal López stated that vaccines not only safeguard individual health, but also contribute to the creation of healthier and more protected communities during the cold season. “Prevention is key and vaccination emerges as an essential tool to achieve it,” he assured.
