American singer Taylor Swift postponed her concert in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday due to extreme temperatures, a day after one of her fans died during her concert.
“The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s concert due to the extreme temperatures in Rio,” Swift wrote on Instagram about two hours before she went on stage. “The safety and well-being of my fans, my fellow artists, and the crew must and always will come first.”
On Friday, the company organizing Swift’s concert said on Instagram that Ana Clara Benevides (23 years old) fell ill during the concert, which was held at Nilton Santos Stadium, and later died in the hospital.
The Rio Regional Health Authority stated that the cause of her death is not yet known and will be investigated.
On Friday, Rio recorded a record high in the heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, at 59.3 degrees Celsius. The index reached its peak on Saturday at 59.7 degrees Celsius.
