Since 1972, the 600-mile route has been measured annually by Jane Dochin.

This year she set off again with her horse Diamond from the small farm where she lives near Hexham in Northumberland.

“I love camping and I love the countryside,” she says. “The more I travel, the more nice people I’ve met that I want to come back and meet again.”

Jane sets off with everything she needs, including a tent, food, a few other items, and her Jack Russell Terrier, Dinky, in a saddlebag.

“She likes to sit there,” says Jane, “She’s quite happy just sitting there and watching the world go by her.”

Although the lady has reached a respectable age, she has no intention of giving up her annual ride. In addition, she adds that she remembers the route by heart, she does not need a map or a compass. If a problem should ever happen, over the years she has gotten to know many residents of the area around the route – she would always have someone to ask for help.

The trip takes about seven weeks, depending on the weather. Jane tries to avoid traveling in rainy weather.

During the long journey, Jane subsists on porridge, oatcakes and cheese, and has an old mobile phone with a six-week battery life, although reception can be problematic at times.

Even though Jane doesn’t like to travel in rainy weather, this year the weather didn’t spoil it. But despite this, she made her annual trip with her trusty horse Diamond and dog Dinky.
