Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The conflict between Israel and Palestine involving the superpower United States (US) was stirred up by an old letter from Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The letter was broadcast by The Guardian before being deleted.

The article contains a message written by bin Laden 21 years ago. However, the message was shared and spread several million times on social media.

The “letter to America” written by bin Laden began being shared on TikTok on Tuesday (14/11/2023), sparking a heated debate about US support for Israel in the current war against Hamas.

Bin Laden was the mastermind of the September 11 attacks 22 years ago which killed nearly 3,000 people by crashing a passenger jet into the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York and the Pentagon.

The White House sharply criticized the online phenomenon and TikTok said it was taking action to remove related posts.

The transcript contains bin Laden’s statement that the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001 because of its support for Israel.

The link to the original document on The Guardian’s website was replaced with a statement saying it was shared “without full context”.

“This page previously featured a document containing, in translation, the full text of the ‘letter to the American people’ by Osama bin Laden, reported in the Observer on Sunday 24 November 2002,” he wrote.

“The transcript published on our site has been shared widely on social media without full context. Therefore, we have decided to remove it and direct readers to the news article that originally contextualized it.”

The White House in a statement on

“Especially now, when antisemitic violence is increasing in the world, and right after Hamas terrorists committed the worst massacre of the Jewish people since the Holocaust in the name of the same conspiracy theory,” said the White House, reported by AFP.

Response TikTok

TikTok said in X that it was “proactively and aggressively removing this content and investigating how it ended up on our platform.”

“This does not only happen on TikTok and has appeared on various platforms and media,” added the Chinese-owned application.

Bin Laden’s message, released a year after September 11, outlined his objections to Western activity in Muslim countries, and condemned the United States for its support of Israel and its approach to the Palestinian territories.

It also denounced what it called Western “lies, immorality and debauchery” and argued that attacks on civilians and the United States were justified.

“They deployed hundreds of thousands of troops against us and formed an alliance with Israel to oppress us and occupy our land – that was the reason for our response on the 11th,” he said.

After nearly 10 years as the world’s most wanted man, bin Laden was tracked down and killed by US special forces at his compound in Pakistan in 2011.
