Taylor Swift puts her concerts ahead of her Eras-concert tour in Rio de Janeiro ends tonight due to the death of a fan. 23-year-old Ana Benevides attended yesterday’s concert, suffered cardiac arrest twice due to the extreme heat and died on the way to the hospital.
In a handwritten statement on Instagram, Swift said: “I’m writing this from my dressing room at the stadium: We have decided to postpone tonight’s concert. The safety and health of my fans, fellow artists and crew always comes first.” Swift will perform three times in Rio de Janeiro. The concert she was supposed to give tonight has been moved to Monday. Her concert tomorrow appears to be going ahead as usual for now.
It is currently extremely hot in Rio de Janeiro with wind chill temperatures reaching almost 59 degrees. Benevides flew for the first time in her life, and posted a video on Instagram of herself, like thousands of others, waiting in line at the stadium. Once inside the stadium it got even hotter. Other fans described it “like a sauna”. It was so hot that people’s hair became wet with sweat as soon as they entered. Visitors told AP that they had trouble breathing and sometimes feared they might faint.
Handing out water
During the show, Swift stopped the concert to give water to a group that managed to catch her attention. The organizer is blamed for not allowing or distributing bottled water despite the extreme weather conditions.
Brazil’s Minister of Justice pledged on X that water bottles for personal use are now allowed at concerts and festivals, and that concert organizers must make free water available. More first aid personnel are also being deployed.
Correspondent Nina Jurna:
“People flock to the sea, or try to cool down in parks under shade trees. Many people carry water bottles with them on the street, and that is also the advice of the municipality, which has declared code red. In some places in the additional drinking points have been installed in the city and in public buildings or free bottled water has been distributed.
Tips and advice are also continuously given through the media on how to best protect yourself against this heat and the bright sun and how to prevent fainting or vomiting, which is what many people suffer from.”
