The Eagles managed to follow up with a home win. After the win in the derby with Třebíčí, the Nevoga arena danced even today. In the match against Slavia Prague, Znojmo managed to get three points after a relatively balanced battle. Tomáš Svoboda, Lukáš Adámek and Martin Šťovíček scored for the home team.
The entry into the match was very cautious from the point of view of both teams. The first timid offensive attempts usually ended shortly after crossing the offensive blue line, and the goalkeepers had no great difficulty with promotional shots. Slavia got into huge problems in the middle of the third period, when they conceded two two-minute penalties at once, opening up a luxurious advantage for Orly. And not using it would be a huge sin. Of which the captain was aware Tomas Svoboda, who burned Málek with a quick blow from the circle. The home team continued with a classic power play, in which Jan Hruška only threatened with a shot to the far post. Prague could immediately counter, as they too were offered a power play. They spent most of this time in front of Groh, they clamped down on the Znojmo defending foursome, but even Lukáš Žejdl could not sweep the puck past the moving goalkeeper from close range.
The guests did not use the man advantage in the field, but they created pressure, which they drew on in the following minutes. The Eagles barely resisted and basically just punted out of their defensive zone. It wasn’t until the end of the third period that they took another breath to attack and that could have confirmed the lead right away. Tejnor’s pointed shot was released by Málek between the concrete blocks and the puck slowly drifted past the goal line, but at the last moment it was deflected by one of the defending players. Znojmo took the 1:0 lead to the cabins.
After returning to the ice, Slavia managed to equalize from the first action. Tomas Knotek quickly found his way in the jam in front of Groh and delivered the rebound into the net. The Znojmo team could soon be one step ahead of their opponent again, but due to their numerical advantage, this time they were unable to create a bigger scoring opportunity, and the guests blocked the Eagles’ shooting attempts well. In the middle of the duel, Jan Zahradníček got to the puck in the free space in front of the Málka goal, but the goalkeeper was ready for his hard finish. As the minutes ticked by, the red and white began to speak more. After a quick offensive action, Klikorka finished off, whose shot went over Groh’s hand and narrowly missed the far post, a moment later Slavík again checked the catcher of the masked man from a lightning break.
Although the Slavists had more of the game at the end of the second act, the collaboration between Sklenář and Adamek worked perfectly. Both players demonstrated an exemplary transition into the attacking third and finished off after an incentive from behind the goal Lukáš Adamek absolutely accurate and once again gave his colors the continuous lead.
The visitors’ effort to equalize was clearly visible from the opening throw-in of the third period. However, the players from the Prague team encountered a very well-functioning defense of the home team. The first onslaught came only at the start of the 47th minute, when Slavia’s power play started, in which the hockey spectacle moved to a longer time in front of the Groha shrine. The biggest chance was wasted at the very end by Žejdl, who shot over the Znojmo goal from a good position. As the minutes ticked by, the tension at the stadium in Znojmo could be cut, the teams tried not to make mistakes and the drama gathered pace. But in the 54th minute, the Eagles made a strong move to three points thanks to a play, at the end of which he made no mistake Martin Šťovíček. Slavia had to bet everything on one card, but neither the power play nor the recall of the goalkeeper helped. In addition, the visiting substitute made a wrong substitution a minute before the final siren, and the subsequent penalty practically ruined all chances to adjust the score.
Testimonials from coaches
Václav Baďouček (Znojmo): We are happy that we won all three points in this important match. I think we played a better game than the opponent today and we went for the win. What I am very happy about today is that the boys were able to bounce back after the really unsuccessful match in Prostějov and avoided unnecessary expulsions and mistakes. It was important for us that we were able to use a five-on-three power play. Although the opponent was able to quickly equalize at the beginning of the second period, we were in control of the game for the rest of the match.
Daniel Tvrzník (Slavia): In our situation, we cannot afford to go two minutes into three at the beginning of the match. That goal affected our game even though we were able to equalize. Then we conceded cheaply again and with one goal on the opponent’s ice we could hardly win. We cannot choose our opponents and we have to score points against everyone. Unfortunately, we keep repeating similar mistakes and this reduces our performance.
