Joris Nieuwenhuis booked his first victory in the Superprestige on Saturday. The Dutch cyclocross rider crossed the finish line alone in Merksplas after an impressive solo. Among the women, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado was once again supreme.
Nieuwenhuis had a lead of no less than one and a half minutes at the finish over Belgian classification leader Eli Iserbyt, who crossed the finish line just ahead of his compatriot Niels Vandeputte.
The 27-year-old Nieuwenhuis pulled away from his competitors in the first of seven rounds. The Belgian duo Iserbyt and Vandeputte kept an eye on the Baloise-Trek Lions rider, but did not get any closer. Nieuwenhuis was able to expand his lead lap by lap and thus achieved his biggest victory in his professional career.
After a second place in Niel, Nieuwenhuis showed what he was capable of on the muddy course in Merksplas. In 2017, Nieuwenhuis became world cyclo-cross champion among the promises. Since the end of last year, he has again focused entirely on cyclo-cross within his team.
Alvarado took advantage of Brand’s mistakes
Alvarado won her third victory in a row in the Superprestige on Saturday. The Rotterdam from Alpecin-Deceuninck benefited from some mistakes by compatriot Lucinda Brand, who crossed the finish line second. The Belgian Marion Norbert Riberolle prevented an entirely Dutch podium by passing Annemarie Worst in the final lap.
“I am really very happy with this,” said a muddy Alvarado after her fourth victory of the season. “I actually didn’t feel that good during the race. I also didn’t get off well and was held up for a while. I had to fight to close the gap.”
Last week Alvardo also won the Dendermonde World Cup. A cross for the World Cup will follow on Sunday in Troyes, France. There, Alvarado will compete against Puck Pieterse, among others, who returns after a break.
