A 19-year-old worker died after being accidentally run over by a collection crane driven by his father in Lower Manhattan (NYC)yesterday at the beginning of the day.
According to the NYPD, the tragic accident involving a construction crew happened at First Avenue and East 7th Street in East Village around 8:30 a.m. Friday.
In principle NYPD said there was no crime and it was a tragic accident. But federal workplace safety officials were on the scene Friday afternoon conducting their own investigation. The names of those involved have not been revealed.
Troy Lorenzo, a veteran construction company owner, witnessed the accident firsthand and saw the young 42-year-old father at the wheel of the tow truck, backing up while his teenage son was behind the machine, acting as a guide and directing traffic.
Lorenzo told Pix11 what The son got too close to the wheels and was crushed. Paramedics pronounced him at the scene. “He was hysterical. You couldn’t even talk to him,” the witness commented about the father.
“The way the machine is designed, there are a lot of blind spots. You should be at least 10 or 15 feet away from the rear tire since you are in reverse. This child was too close to the machine, too close to the tire. And once that tire grabs your boot, it’s like an alligator. It grabs you and draws you in. There’s no way to escape that.” Lorenzo added.
In another recent dramatic workplace accident, a 46-year-old Hispanic janitor worker died earlier this month after becoming trapped inside a cement truck in The Bronx (NYC).
In May, the former boss of a young worker who was crushed to death by a falling cabin was charged in the case, two years later, also in the Bronx.
In April it was announced that three contractors would face additional charges for the death of Segundo Huertas (48), an Ecuadorian worker who was the victim of a work accident in the Bronx in the summer of 2019.
