The prosecution wants former President Donald Trump to stand trial from August 5 in the case in which he is charged with election influence in the state of Georgia.
There are only months before the November 5 presidential election.
Previously, prosecutor Fani Willis stated that the case may not end until late 2024 or early 2025. This could mean that Trump could already be president before the trial ends.
Trump opposes the start date, according to court documents filed late Friday, the same day the proposal was announced.
It is up to Judge Scott McAfee to decide the question.
19 defendants
Trump and 18 former employees are charged with having tried to manipulate the election results and thereby discredit the election of Joe Biden in November 2020.
Four co-defendants, including three lawyers who worked for Trump or his 2020 campaign, have so far pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
Trump and the remaining defendants have pleaded not guilty.
The Republican Party will choose its presidential candidate in July, after months of nomination battles. Trump leads by a large margin in the opinion polls.
Judge rules that Trump contributed to rebellion
In the state of Colorado, a judge has ruled that Donald Trump can run for office. It was a group of voters who brought the case to court. They believed he should not be allowed to stand for election for alleged insurrectionary activities in connection with the storming of Congress on 6 January 2021 through his calls.
The decision is a victory for Trump. But judge Sarah Wallace states that his “behaviour and statements were the real background for and a significant contributory cause” of the attack on the US National Assembly.
The case in Colorado is seen as a test case for more extensive attempts to disqualify Trump from the election. It has its basis in the constitution, which prohibits people who have participated in insurgent activities from holding office at the federal level.
The decision will probably be appealed.
