Wolfsburg. The 3rd Wolfsburg Health Conference will take place on November 22nd. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the indoor swimming pool – Kultur am Schachtweg, Schachtweg 31, 38440 Wolfsburg, this year’s event is dedicated to a topic that raises new ethical, psychological and medical questions in the healthcare system and particularly challenges those affected and their personal environment. The topic is “Gender Diversity in Health Care.”
People who do not or do not fully identify with their gender assigned at birth have become much more visible in our society. They experience encouragement, but also often a lack of understanding, exclusion and discrimination. Children and young adults in particular are particularly at risk.
Platform for dialogue and exchange
“Dealing with gender diversity in health care is important for an inclusive and respectful society,” emphasizes Mayor Dennis Weilmann. “The 3rd Wolfsburg Health Conference offers a platform for dialogue and exchange in order to develop solutions together and create a supportive environment for all people.”
Monika Müller, Head of the Department of Social Affairs and Health, Hospital and Sport: “In the search for their sexual identity, children and young people in particular and their families often feel alone and unprotected – here I see us as the Wolfsburg health region having a responsibility to be open about sexual diversity to discuss, identify health-related needs and develop ways to reduce discrimination.”
Specialist lectures planned
The conference offers two technical but understandable lectures and important exchanges with advisory bodies, institutions and associations. The speakers at the event offer great expertise in the area of gender diversity: Prof. Dr. Schweizer, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Medical School Hamburg and first chairwoman of the German Society for Sexual Research, as well as Dr. Chris Reinert from pediatric and adolescent endocrinology at the University Medical Center Göttingen. The target group of the conference is those affected and their relatives, the medical profession, educational specialists, nursing staff and interested citizens.
Dr. Volker Heimeshoff, Head of Health Division: “In open, democratic societies there is a variety of roles that are neither typically male nor typically female. In authoritarian societies, on the other hand, there are essentially a group of female and male roles. We have to ask ourselves how children and young people in our society cope when parts of society represent “diversity” and parts of society represent “heteronormativity”. This is a central goal of the Wolfsburg Health Conference: to become aware of and address the change and importance of gender roles in our society.”
The conference is held by the Wolfsburg Health Region. The health region as a project of the state of Lower Saxony has the goal of making health care in Wolfsburg close to home and of high quality today and in the future. Current issues in society play a crucial role in healthcare.
The health region is financed by the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, BKK Central Regional Association, VDEK, AOK and the Lower Saxony Ministry for Social Affairs, Health and Equality. A themed book exhibition by the Wolfsburg City Library will take place during the event. Books can be borrowed on site.
