Vienna (OTS) – Tomorrow, Saturday, November 18, 2023, Antibiotic Awareness Day, i.e. World Antibiotic Day, will be celebrated worldwide. Veterinarians are taking the opportunity to point out their responsible use of antibiotics in animal health.
“It is also very important to us veterinarians to raise awareness of the global threat posed by antibiotic resistance. Veterinarians also play a crucial role in the fight against this problem and are committed to the responsible use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine,” emphasizes Mag. Kurt Frühwirth, President of the Austrian Chamber of Veterinarians, and continues:
“We are proud that in recent years we have been able to make a significant contribution to reducing antibiotic consumption in veterinary medicine in Austria through careful monitoring. The sales volumes have fallen steadily in recent years, as is also proven by the regular sales volumes Reports as part of antibiotic monitoring, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES)“, so Frühwirth.
Veterinarians ensure that antibiotics are only used when necessary.
“The excessive use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine as well as in human medicine contributes to the development of resistance, which therefore not only endangers animal health, but also the effectiveness of antibiotics in human medicine,” says Frühwirth. The European “One Health” strategy must therefore be intensively pushed forward. “We must work together to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics in order to protect the health of animals and people alike,” emphasizes Frühwirth in conclusion.
