November 17, 2023 – Coaches and referees from German professional football met this week at the DFL premises in Frankfurt am Main.
The agenda included current topics from the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga as well as news from the respective areas of those involved. Among other things, what was discussed was: Framework appointment calendar for the 2024/25 season, the interpretation of injury time and the possible inclusion of professional coaches in a referee training camp during the coming winter break. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and the actions of the fourth official on the sidelines were also discussed. Those involved exchanged their respective perspectives on all agenda items in order to incorporate the different impulses into their own work.
The participants included the coaches Steffen Baumgart (1. FC Köln) and Frank Schmidt (1. FC Heidenheim 1846 e. V.) as well as Frank Kramer and Bruno Labbadia – each representing the “Trainer Working Group” of the Association of German Football Teachers (BDFL). Also on site were Benno Möhlmann as the current BDFL President and BDFL Federal Managing Director Marcus Dippel.
The following representatives took part on behalf of DFB Schiri GmbH: Lutz Michael Fröhlich (Managing Director Sports & Communication), Dr. Jochen Drees (Head video-assistent/" data-heading="Video-Assistent" data-content="Der Video-Assistent soll den Schiedsrichter unterstützen und mehr Gerechtigkeit im Fußball ermöglichen." data-more="mehr">Video assistants and technologies), Peter Sippel (Sporting Director Bundesliga) and Rainer Werthmann (Sporting Director 2nd Bundesliga) as well as the current Bundesliga referee Sascha Stegemann.
The DFL was represented by Ansgar Schwenken (member of the DFL management and director of game operations & fans) and Andreas Nagel (DFL director of sports & youth).
The exchange between DFL game operations, coaches and referees is a format valued by everyone involved and is carried out every six months.
