A library in Blackpool, England has recovered a book that was 45 years overdue. The woman who owned it all those years apologized and jokingly said she was “a little late.”
The woman borrowed the book, a study of the British Lord of the Rings-writer JRR Tolkien, on March 13, 1978. The loan period was three weeks.
The woman worked, according to the English newspaper The Gazette at that time at a supermarket in the city and regularly came by during her break to pick up a stack of books. However, when the store closed for good and she could no longer work there, she reportedly returned all the books.
Except for one. While cleaning out her house she came across the old book. The employee who took it says to the BBC that she was shocked when she saw the date.
No fine
In 1978, according to the library, there was a fine of 1 cent per day for books returned late. After 45 years that would be an amount of more than 164 euros. However, the woman does not have to worry about this. The fine was abolished several years ago.
