Ukraine says it is fighting with Russians on the southern bank of the Dnipro River. In many places the river forms the front line between Russian and Ukrainian troops. Russia previously confirmed fighting on the eastern bank.
Ukraine says several units have crossed the Dnipro River in several places. The country also claims to have carried out “successful actions”.
A piece of land is said to have been conquered, but Ukraine does not say where. In addition, the units are said to have driven out Russian soldiers and created several “bridgeheads”. Bridgeheads mean that they have sufficient control over an area on the other side to enable the supply of additional troops.
“One of the main objectives of these battles is to push the enemy as far as possible from the Right Bank in order to protect the Ukrainian civilian population, in particular that of the city of Kherson, from continued Russian shelling,” spokesman Andriy Kovalyov said at a military briefing Youtube Channel.
Kherson is on the front line and has been bombarded by Russian artillery for months. Dozens of civilians were killed.
Fighting by the river
According to observations from the site liveuamap.com, among others, there have been fights in a swampy and wetland area between the dam at Nova Kakhovka and the mouth of the river. But there are no indications that the Ukrainians have captured important bridges, such as the one at the dam or the bridge at Antonivka.
Russia admitted this week for the first time that Ukrainian troops have crossed the Dnipro, but has not yet responded to these recent reports from Ukraine. Ukraine’s statements have not yet been confirmed by other sources.
