Tennis’ ‘Big Three’ – Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer – have continued their impressive run at the 2023 ATP Finals, a testament to their continued dominance in the world of tennis.

Djokovic secures his place in the semi-finals

Novak Djokovic, who played substitute Hubert Hurkacz in his final group game on Thursday afternoon after Stefanos Tsitsipas dropped out in Turin, secured his place in the semi-finals in three sets.

This qualification extends the remarkable streak of at least one of the ‘Big Three’ reaching the semi-finals of the ATP Finals every year since 2002. Jannik Sinner defeated Holger Rune in a three-set battle later on Thursday evening to complete the group stage with a perfect 3-0 record and ensure both he and Djokovic advance to the semi-finals.

The continued dominance of the ‘Big Three’

The series began in 2002 when Federer reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals for the first time and was eliminated there by Lleyton Hewitt. Federer won the 2003 and 2004 ATP Finals, defeating Andre Agassi and Leyton Hewitt in the respective finals, before losing to David Nalbandian in the 2005 final.

In subsequent years, Djokovic and Federer dominated the event, with Djokovic winning four consecutive titles between 2012 and 2015. Federer was eliminated in the group stage in all of these years, while Nadal made it in 2013 and 2015.

The ‘Big Three’ reached the semi-finals together for the first time in 2010, with Federer beating both Djokovic in the semi-final and Nadal in the final. Federer won his sixth and final title at the 2011 ATP Finals with a triumph over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Djokovic’s path to the 2023 semifinals

The 36-year-old Serbian Djokovic, who tied Federer in 2022 with a record six ATP Finals titles, will find out who he will face in the 2023 semifinals after the conclusion of the Red Group on Friday.

Possible opponents are Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev. This continued dominance of the ‘Big Three’ in the tennis world is a testament to their exceptional talent and endurance, making them legends of the sport.
