NBA grants “disabled player waiver” to Grizzlies

Small compensation to Memphis for the serious injury that has kept Steven Adams out this season. As reported by the NBA, it has granted except for disabled player to the Grizzlies for the loss of the center, which allows the team to use a $6.3 million waiver that must be cleared before March 11; Shams Charania reports on The athletic.

As stated in the collective bargaining agreement, Memphis can use this amount of money to strengthen themselves, as long as they do so with a transfer where they receive a player who is in the final year of his contract, or through free agency by signing a players for a single campaign.

The truth is that Adam’s situation is troubling. After being able to play just 42 games in the 2022-23 season, the rehabilitation he undertook on his joint did not work as expected and he finally had surgery three weeks ago to repair the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Such an intervention should put an end to the 30-year-old’s problems, but it will see him miss the entire campaign.

If on a personal level it’s a very hard blow, it’s felt no less by the Grizzlies, who also have Brandon Clarke injured and are still waiting for Ja Morant’s 25-game suspension to pass. At the same time, the losses are accumulating to the point where they are last in the Western Conference at 2-9.
