International Zendal Awards: Recognizing Innovation in Biotechnology Research

The Zendal Group has presented its awards, which aim to disseminate and recognize new research projects in the field of biotechnology.

The fourth edition of the International Zendal Awards They already have winners. This year, 95 high-quality research papers from up to seven nationalities have been presented.

In the category of Human healthendowed with 40,000 euros, has been recognized as a innovative project on bacterial resistanceled by doctor María del Mar Tomás, from the Instituto de Investigación Biómédica de A Coruña (INIBIC) of the Hospital A Coruña.

In the category of Animal healththe first has been awarded bee foulbrood vaccinea devastating bacterial disease for this species, developed by one of the teams of Road Animal Healthwhich has received 25,000 euros.

In addition, a tribute award has been given to the doctor in Molecular Biology, Inmaculada Ibáñez de Cáceres, and the second prize for the best work in sustainability, for the initiative focused on reduction of microplastics from the team of scientists led by Victor Guallar from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

A vaccine against Paenibacillus larvae

The North American innovation center Dalan Animal Health, in Georgia, is developing the world’s first vaccine to protect bees against Paenibacillus larvaethe causative agent of this devastating bacterial disease for honey bees.

The only way to contain its spread is to destroy infected colonies, as well as the use of antibiotics, which entails significant economic losses for beekeepers. Hence, this innovative proposal foresees a positive impact for the protection of this key species in the survival of many ecosystems.

Dalan has provided a safe, non-chemical approach in protecting this vital species to maintain the food supply. A large-scale field trial is currently being carried out with 400 commercial hives. They will be closely monitored over the next two years to evaluate the effects of vaccination on important endpoints in the field, such as honey flow, overwinter survival and disease resistance.

The gala, which was opened by the CEO of the group Andrés Fernández, and closed by the Minister of Health Julio García Comesaña, featured interventions by Martín Barreiro, physicist and expert in Meteorology, and Nerea Irigoyen, virologist at the University of Cambridge . From different perspectives, both speakers addressed the climate emergency and its influence on human and animal healtha transversal axis in this edition of the awards.
