Sweden Plans to Increase Nuclear Power Production to Meet Electricity Demand

The Swedish government plans to massively increase nuclear power generation to meet growing demand for electricity, the government announced on Thursday.

The government’s plan envisages an increase in production that would correspond to two nuclear reactors by 2035 at the latest, and a massive expansion of nuclear energy production by 2045.

Sweden’s Energy Minister Ebba Busch said the plan would be another step towards making Sweden “a strong nuclear power again”. “We need to double Sweden’s electricity production in the next 25 years,” she added.

The government estimates that the country will need ten new conventional nuclear reactors by 2045 to achieve the goal.

Sweden currently has six reactors operating at three different power plants, and in August the government announced it would remove barriers to building new reactors.

Swedish Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said the cost of the project would be reviewed “as soon as possible”. Meanwhile, a representative of the environmental protection organization “Greenpeace” warned of a possible increase in costs, pointing to similar projects in France, Finland and the United Kingdom.
