The man who attacked US politician Nancy Pelosi’s partner with a hammer has been found guilty by a jury. He faces a prison sentence of up to fifty years.
The man entered the home of the then Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives and her husband Paul Pelosi last October. There he abused Paul Pelosi.
Jurors deliberated for more than eight hours before finding David DePape guilty of attempted kidnapping of an official, assault on an immediate family member of an official and attempted kidnapping. DePape himself did not react when the jury delivered its verdict.
DePape said during earlier testimony that he actually wanted to kidnap Nancy Pelosi to “take her hostage and break her kneecaps.” He came up with several right-wing conspiracy theories. According to DePape, Nancy Pelosi lied to the American people.
Not yet recovered
Paul Pelosi (83) has still not fully recovered more than a year after the attack. He suffered two wounds to his head and a skull fracture. The neurosurgeon who operated on him used plates and screws to repair his skull.
DePape appears to regret the attack. He said in court: “He was never my target and I am sorry he was injured.” A judge will determine the sentence at a later time.
