Chic hairstyle: This is how much money the government spends on styling

The government coalition ministers and state secretaries spent a lot of money on their styling in 2023. A list shows the extent.

To what extent does it increase? Federal Government Services related to external beauty? This question was answered by the ministers of the traffic light coalition, summarized in one published preliminary version. The small request was submitted in writing by Bundestag member Stephan Brandner (AfD). The document shows that the politicians and their civil servants and parliamentary state secretaries pay a lot for make-up artists and hairdressers. After all, in addition to the fashionable appearance, the head is also part of the visual appearance.

According to the answer to the query, the federal government has spent around 186,000 euros in this regard since the beginning of 2023. According to the list, the Foreign Office is responsible for the most: the ministry of Annalena Baerbock (Greens) has spent 98,770 euros on hairstyles and cosmetics since January (up to the deadline of October 12th). Because Germany’s foreign minister travels a lot around the world, this inglorious top position makes sense: after all Baerbock most of the appointments come true – for which she is then prepared accordingly.

The Federal Chancellery under Olaf Scholz (SPD) is more economical, the expenditure for this is 23,013 euros, but is still second place in the ranking. The Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, on the other hand, is skimping – the financial outlay for the AfD request is just 550 euros. The responsible government minister is Robert Habeck – and he made headlines months ago because he was looking for a photographic companion for hundreds of thousands of euros per year.

  • Ministry of Defense (Boris Pistorius/CDU): 3870 Euro
  • Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (Steffi Lemke/Greens): 5333 euros

The Ministry of Health under Karl Lauterbach is currently one of the ministries that does not appear on the list.

Government spending: The hairstyle has to be right – the former chancellor is still taking advantage of the offer today

According to the information, the list for the federal ministries includes possible surcharges for travel activities and materials. What is missing from the listed costs, however, are the travel costs themselves: A corresponding section explains: “Possible travel costs incurred as part of traveling as part of an official delegation are not recorded separately and are not included here.”

In the summer of 2023, Reiner Holznagel, President of the Taxpayers’ Association, criticized Bild, that it is difficult to convince taxpayers to “pay for politicians’ make-up artists and hairstylists”. He advocated that the costs be “reduced to the bare minimum” and that, in case of doubt, the expenses should be borne by the government ministers themselves. The Daily Mirror Meanwhile, reported that ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel still uses her own (freelance) assistant who takes care of the Union politician’s hair and styling when she travels. These costs (allegedly around 3,000 euros per month) are also borne by the German state.
