If the Polish authorities do not resolve the issue of blocking border crossings with Ukraine, the European Commission may open criminal proceedings against Warsaw. This was reported by the Polish RMF FM with reference to its correspondent in Brussels.
According to EU legislation, Warsaw is obliged to ensure the free movement of Ukrainian trucks at border crossings, a representative of the European Commission told RMF FM.
“Some representatives of the European Commission believe that the Polish authorities are not doing everything to solve the problem and stop the protest of Polish carriers. Brussels is clearly losing patience. Officially, the EC does not want to comment on the measures it may take against the Polish authorities, since, as it assures, negotiations with Poland and Ukraine are ongoing. The European Commission is still in contact with the authorities of both countries, we cannot comment on possible measures as discussions are ongoing.” – said the EC representative.
According to unofficial data, Brussels is considering the possibility of introducing punitive measures against Warsaw in connection with the violation by the Polish authorities of the provisions of the EU regulation on trade liberalization with Ukraine, which was recently extended until June 2024. It is reported that the commission is now going to study the legal basis for launching the procedure.
