Valve Announces Resale Measures for Limited Edition Steam Deck Model

On November 15th, Valve, which operates Steam, announced measures to prevent the resale of a new model (limited edition) of its portable PC game console “Steam Deck” equipped with organic EL. Continuing from the previous model, there will be conditions such as past Steam usage history when purchasing. The regular model of this aircraft is scheduled to be sold in Japan through KOMODO, which will likely be a separate sales system.

Steam Deck is a portable PC game console created by Valve. Sales of this aircraft began in February 2022 in Europe and the United States, and it was rolled out by KOMODO in December of the same year in East Asia, including Japan. It is a device that has attracted attention among gamers, and KOMODO’s CEO Ricky Wooi said in an interview with our magazine that it is doing well, with “sold-out models in each region” and “sales exceeding expectations in Japan.” He was talking (related article). On November 10th of this year, a new model Steam Deck equipped with organic EL was announced, and sales were announced to start on November 17th Japan time. This has once again attracted the attention of gamers.

Valve has announced that resale measures will be implemented when the new limited edition model equipped with organic EL is released. According to Valve, the company is taking “measures to minimize the impact of bots and resellers” to make the new Steam Deck exclusives as available to real customers as possible.

Specific resale measures have also been revealed. In addition to being a resident of the United States or Canada at the time of purchase, your Steam account must be in “good standing” and you must have a history of making purchases on Steam before November of this year. Apparently there will be restrictions such as only one unit can be purchased. This is the standard set by Valve for sales to the United States and Canada. The standard model of this aircraft is scheduled to be sold in Japan by KOMODO, so it appears that the same standards will not apply to purchases from within Japan.

In addition, measures were taken against the hoarding behavior of resellers in the old model Steam Deck as well. As with this time, there were conditions such as account status and purchase history on Steam (related article). The same conditions will apply to the new Steam Deck Limited Edition.

Steam Deck” The new model equipped with organic EL is scheduled to go on sale in Japan from KOMODO on November 17th at 3 a.m. (Japan time).
