The vast majority of voting cards for the House of Representatives elections have been delivered to the correct doormat, according to a tour by NU.nl. But in Amsterdam, Nijmegen and a few smaller municipalities, thousands of voting cards were not delivered or were delivered incorrectly.
In Groningen, Utrecht and Almere, “as far as we know”, all voting passes have been delivered correctly. Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Breda have also received “no signals that voting passes have not been delivered or have not been delivered properly”.
In The Hague, “some residents indicated that they did not have a voting card.” “We will arrange a replacement pass for those people so that they can vote next week,” says a spokesperson. According to her, one of the most common causes is that a voter has recently moved and the voting card was delivered to the old address.
Requests for replacement voting cards are being received in almost all municipalities. For example, the original passes have been lost or become unusable.
In Amsterdam, more than 1,200 voting cards were not delivered properly
Something went wrong with the shipping in Nijmegen. At least 806 people received a voting card at their old address because the date of sending had not been copied correctly. “Everyone has now received a letter in which we explain this,” says a spokesperson.
In Amsterdam, 1,241 voting cards were not properly delivered. According to a spokesperson, there are “several reasons for this”. “For example, in a street there is no longer any concern from a certain house number onwards. But in another area the picture varies depending on the house number.” Amsterdam has sent residents a letter explaining how they can request a replacement voting card.
Things went a lot better in Tilburg. Yet, according to a NU.nl reporter, several voting passes have not been delivered, including in the Stappegoor district. It is not clear how many passes are involved.
Even in smaller municipalities, thousands of people did not receive a voting card
It was previously announced that approximately four thousand voting cards had not been delivered in the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn. According to a spokesperson, the delivery was delayed due to a process error in the PostNL sorting center, wrote Broadcasting West.
In the municipality of Goirle, sixteen hundred people received no mail for two weeks and therefore no voting cards. “We immediately started an investigation and unfortunately we had to conclude that there was one employee who did not function properly,” says a PostNL spokesperson.
In the municipality of Noordoostpolder in Flevoland, all voting cards had been given the wrong sorting code. “There is a very good chance that voters have had the wrong voting card or no voting card at all,” writes Broadcasting Flevoland. It is not yet clear how many voting cards are involved, but it may involve everyone in the municipality. According to the municipality, they are “working hard” on a solution.
According to the PostNL spokesperson, the fact that things go well in most cases is the result of a special team that “closely” monitors the delivery of election mail. “It concerns millions of pieces of mail, so unfortunately it can happen that something goes wrong. This team is then in direct contact with the municipality in question to resolve this as quickly and as best as possible.” More than thirteen million voting cards have been sent successfully.
