School Vaccination Strategy: HPV and dTp Vaccines in Biobío Region

The annual school vaccination strategy considers immunization against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough; in addition to protection against human papillomavirus.

HPV vaccine

A coverage of 82% and 83% registers to date the vaccine against the Human Papillomavirus in the Biobío Region, with a total of 17 1,092 fourth-grade students and 18,074 fifth-grade students have been immunized through primary care teams in educational establishments in the region.

“As a region, we have surpassed the school vaccination coverage for the Human Papillomavirus, with a total of 17,092 fourth-grade students and 18,074 fifth-grade students immunized, yielding coverage of 82% and 83% respectively. Without a doubt, this allows schoolchildren to prevent sexually transmitted infections and cancers with a high risk of fatal outcome in the future,” said the Seremi of Health of Biobío, dr. Eduardo Barra Jofré.

It is important to remember that the vaccine against the Human Papillomavirus has the explicit support of the Chilean Society of Infectious Diseases, Advisory Council on Vaccines and Vaccination Strategies of the Ministry of Health, National Medicines Agency of the Institute of Public Health, Advisory Group of the World Health Organization (WHO), Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety, among other important national and international organizations.

dTp vaccine (acellular)

The schedule of the National Immunization Program incorporates the dTp (acellular) vaccine for boys and girls in first and eighth grade, protecting minors from contracting diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.

The coverage of this vaccine in the region to date registers 17,726 schoolchildren inoculated in first grade (87%) and another 19,542 schoolchildren benefited in eighth grade (84%).

This vaccine is a booster that protects against three diseases; tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. To date, we have registered a total of 17,726 first grade students and 19,542 eighth grade students, which corresponds to 87% and 84% respectively,” the seremi pointed out.

It is necessary to indicate that vaccines constitute one of the health measures that have produced the greatest benefit to humanity, preventing diseases that previously caused major epidemics, consequences and deaths..
