“The Coruña already has an airport», headlined La Voz de Galicia with an image of the first commercial airplane that landed on the Alvedro runway May 25, 1963, an Aviaco Convair that came from Madrid. An operation in which he was accompanied by a squadron of E-16 aircraft that flew over the airport during the event. A milestone that 50,000 people and the Air and Navy Ministers did not want to miss and which marked 60 years yesterday. Aena wanted to commemorate the anniversary with commemorative gifts for passengers on the Iberia flight from the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport.
In the images of the time you can see an airfield with large letters claiming the Herculean city and a large shield with the tower of Hercules perpendicular to the runway. The inauguration marked the culmination of a great social demand and it was possible due to what was described as a “popular subscription” to pay for the airport land, in which the A Coruña City Council contributed six million, the Provincial Council, four; banking, two million, and the Chamber of Commerce, one million. Thirteen million old pesetas (just over 78,000 euros).
The northern corridor airline, which would link the Basque Country with A Coruña, had already been declared of public utility in 1928, but the first airport project would not be endorsed by the Council of Ministers until 11 September 1953. Santiago would go ahead first, opening its airfield in Lavacolla in 1935.
The proposal supported for the A Coruña native was a runway in Alvedro measuring 1,200 by 200 meters and with a construction budget of 8 million pesetas, which would be expanded to 20 and later to 44 (264,445 euros), which will finally allow the construction of a flight runway. of 1,680 meters. Its expansion was soon necessary; a first one was carried out in 1989 and in 2005 it reached 2,340 meters.
The last major work was carried out last year, with the paving of the runway and the creation of an intermediate platform for the turning of aircraft, which forced the closure of the airfield for several weekends.
Alvedro grew since that first landing of an Aviaco plane, with 40 passengersto the record number of travelers that it reached in el 2019, when 1.35 million passed through there. The pandemic constrained this growth and these figures have not yet been recovered. Last year, the airport closed, reaching 963,957 travelers.
However, the airport’s new master plan, which plans to replace the 2014 one, draws a horizon with 1,589,600 and many more actions, which do not have a date, but which will be in line with demand.
