If you had any doubts that Ferraris are still a highly sought-after car, today’s news will undoubtedly make you think better. It has been revealed that a Ferrari 250 GTO has been sold at auction for a whopping £42 million, breaking and setting a new record for the most expensive Ferrari ever sold at auction.
The car, which was sold by RM Sotheby’s in New York, managed to beat the previous record by almost £3m, as the record was last held by another 250 GTO which sold for £39.4m in 2018.
As for why this 250 GTO sold for so much money, it is said to be the only 250 GTO ever driven by Scuderia Ferrari, and since then it has been preserved and protected by a collector in 38 years. This car in particular managed to finish second at the Nurburgring 1,000 km in 1962, and even competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans before that.
There is a small catch to this record, as this is not the most expensive 250 GTO ever sold. That record goes to a car that was sold privately in 2018 for a whopping £52 million.
