Science fiction fans have dreamed of this crossover: William Shatner (Captain Kirk from “Star Trek”) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker from “Star Wars”) meet for the first time on Netflix.

Shatner himself confirmed his participation, but did not yet reveal what role he will take on. It’s a bit of a shame, of course, that we’ll only hear Shatner and Hamill and not see them.
By the time “Star Wars” hit theaters in 1977, “Star Trek” had long since been canceled. But the interest in science fiction sparked by “Star Wars” brought the Enterprise crew back in “Star Trek: The Movie,” and so Luke Skywalker and Captain Kirk coexisted on the big screen for a while without ever meeting each other.
Of course, this was primarily for legal reasons, as it certainly wouldn’t have been difficult to land the Enterprise for an adventure in the “Star Wars” universe. “Star Trek” now has two new James T. Kirks in Paul Wesley and Chris Pine, making it very unlikely that we will one day see William Shatner’s Kirk alongside Luke Skywalker. But Shatner and Mark Hamill in another, joint project? That works!

The reason for the unexpected crossover is Shatner and Hamill’s good relationship with director and nerd legend Kevin Smith. When it came to working on Smith’s new “He-Man” series “Masters of the Universe: Revolution,” neither of them hesitated for long.
Hamill could even be heard as Skeletor in the previous series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”, and now Shatner has also announced his appearance:

Star Wars guy Mark Hamill & myself will be voicing the characters. While Mark plays the deliciously evil skeleton, I’ll play the absolutely gorgeous… oh wait… I’m not supposed to give it away yet. 🤐 Just wait and see!😉William Shatner
Of course it would have been even nicer to actually see Shatner and Hamill side by side and not just hear them, but Kevin Smith was still able to secure a great cast here.
Anyone wondering whether Shatner is really happy with this casting after rarely having kind words for the competing sci-fi franchise just needs to remember this Shatner quote from San Diego ComicCon 2022: “Screw it Star Wars…but not on Mark Hamill.”
