The Future of PlayStation Portal: Cloud Gaming and Remote Play Compatibility Revealed by Sony VP

When Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation Portal handheld at the end of August this year, gamers vented their frustration. Already from the leaks that came in a relatively specific way before the actual presentation, it seemed that Sony inconceivable will limit the possibilities of the streaming console only to playing through Remote Play, which seemed slightly unbelievable considering the use of Android and the logical presence of a Wi-Fi module. All the more so when Sony later famously talked about the possibility of playing selected titles from the PlayStation 5 via the cloud, but only on the console as an alternative to the more usual but time-consuming download. However, if you didn’t trust Sony too much and guessed that in time PlayStation Portal would also handle pure cloud gaming without connecting via Remote Play, you were most likely right. The vice president of the global product strategy department at Sony, Hideaki Nishino, openly hints at this, but so far only in a Japanese interview for Yahoo Japan.

An insider drew attention to the interview Teeth_Tech, who provided a complete machine translation on Twitter. The interview was in the spirit of presenting what Portal should actually be and what concept Nišino and his team have designed for it. For example, the conversation turned to the size of the display, which according to Nišin must be sufficient, because players are used to using a television to play. It was also important to design controls that are familiar to players – ideally in the form of a DualSense controller – and that the main purpose of Portal is to allow people to spend more time playing no matter where they are. This may be a bit against the restrictions on Remote Play, which is also available outside the home network, but it may not be the preferred option if only because the PlayStation must be running at home, over which remote players may not always have 100% control.

However, general and quite predictable statements at the very end complement the essential information indicated in the introduction. We note that this is a machine translation and no one else from Sony has yet commented on this topic, but on the other hand, such translations happen often and are not completely inaccurate. However, Nishino was to hint to Yahoo Japan that cloud game streaming is coming in the future, and more importantly, that Portal is ready for it. “In terms of Portal, Remote Play and the cloud differ only in where the server is located, we have no technical problems with this,” Nishino was supposed to say, adding that Sony “will start with Remote Play” and then move on to “verification”. It does not seem that any process is meant verification, but rather validating other ways players could use the Portal. And finally, it would make sense that Sony wouldn’t want to promise something that might not work in the end before following through on its own streaming initiatives, but even from the start it seems to us that Portal simply must also manage the cloud, taking into account the operating system and other equipment. But we will see how or when the Sony headquarters will react and confirm, clarify or – hopefully not – refute Nišin’s words.
