Rising Electricity Prices in Norway: Impact of Cold Weather and Power Support

(The online newspaper): The cold is about to take its toll on us, and it is now directly affecting electricity prices.

On Wednesday, average prices throughout Norway rise sharply, and for the first time since the beginning of May, the average price is above the highly symbolic limit of 100 euros/MWh over a whole 24-hour period.

In Norwegian kroner, this means an average price of NOK 1.49 per kWh including VAT – before the online rent is added on top.

The most expensive will be in the morning and evening with prices of close to NOK 1.9.

Big power peaks – expensive everywhere

It is not enough that prices are high in the south: for the first time in a very long time, the price in northern Norway will be higher than in southern Norway – albeit only marginally.

According to Montel News the increase in prices is largely about lower wind power production and higher consumption as a result of lower temperatures.

Europower reports that we are at the same time in what is called “ice-laying week” in Sweden and Finland, where the hydropower producers stop production for a few days so that the ice can settle on the water to prevent ice jams in the rivers.

Strong warning about the current in Norway

Power support around the clock

After the change to the electricity subsidy scheme earlier this autumn, the electricity subsidy kicks in every single hour the electricity price goes over 87.5 øre. The state then covers 90 per cent of the electricity price above this level.

On Wednesday, there will be power support in absolutely the entire country, around the clock.

During the morning and evening price peaks, during this period the state covers close to 90 øre of the electricity price.
