Taqadum Party Resignation and Federal Court Decision in Iraqi Government

The Taqadum Party announced the resignation of its representatives in the Iraqi government, and from the presidency of parliamentary committees, following the Federal Court’s termination of the membership of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad al-Halbousi.

The party said in a statement reported by Reuters, on Tuesday, that three ministers who enjoy Al-Halbousi’s support decided to resign from their positions after the court’s decision, and that the party will also boycott the meetings of the ruling coalition, and its deputies will resign from parliamentary committees, and will participate in a “political boycott” of Parliament.

The Federal Court decided, in its session held on Tuesday, to terminate Al-Halbousi’s membership, as well as the membership of the representative, Laith Mustafa Hamoud Al-Dulaimi, as of the date of issuance of the ruling, and considered it “a final and binding decision for all authorities.”

Al-Halbousi said, in a video clip released by his office on Tuesday, that the court’s decision to end his term was “strange,” and that he would ask for clarifications.

Reuters said that the decision will have serious political consequences that will turn the career of the most powerful Sunni Muslim politician in Iraq upside down.

The court’s decision is final and not subject to appeal.

Al-Halbousi was serving his second term as Speaker of Parliament, a position he held for the first time in 2018.

This is the highest position that a Sunni Muslim can hold, according to the Iraqi political system that was established after the war in 2003.

Amer Al-Fayez, an independent parliamentarian, told Reuters that the representatives met to attend a regular parliamentary session. Al-Halbousi was present in the hall when the decision was issued.

Fayez added that Al-Halbousi left the hall as soon as he heard news of the decision, before announcing the opening of the session.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, a Shiite, will assume the presidency of Parliament temporarily, until a new president is elected.
