Get the most out of your connection
We are now used to being connected at any time and anywhere in the house, thanks to the WiFi network. Nowadays, you can surf wirelessly with just about any device – and we especially mean desktop computers, laptops and gaming consoles – without having to connect the device with an Ethernet cable.
But the option of an Ethernet cable is often available. You then have a choice, as you can also connect many devices that have an Ethernet connection to WiFi. And then there are good reasons to choose the internet cable instead of WiFi. Some devices, such as a desktop computer or gaming console, don’t require you to be mobile at all, as you use them in the same place every time.
By connecting as many devices as possible, preferably those that remain in the same place, to the internet via a cable, you relieve the burden on the WiFi network. This is good for mobile devices that do need a WiFi connection.
Do you want sufficient internet speed to stream with one or more devices at the same time? These are the most affordable options on the market.
Ethernet versus wifi
Speed
If you surf via an Ethernet cable, you do so at a speed that will always be higher than an internet connection via WiFi. In some cases this is only fractions of a second, but in certain online video games it can mean a world of difference. If your home has a fiber connection, the ‘fixed’ speed is even higher.
With a cable you are also assured of a constant speed. Thanks to the direct connection, you will not experience any delays due to other devices that are also surfing over the network at that time. This is the case with WiFi. If you surf via WiFi, the speed can fluctuate.
However, there are also solutions for slow WiFi: just think of a mesh network.
Ease of use
If you connect a device to a WiFi network for the first time, you must first enter a password. If you forget to click on ‘remember password’, you will have to do it again next time. That will never happen to you with an Ethernet connection. You plug in the cable and you almost immediately enjoy a fast and stable connection.
Safety
The WiFi network has a password for a reason: it is vulnerable to anyone who wants to connect from outside your home. Therefore, using Ethernet is a safer choice, as an external connection – from outside your home – is not possible. You can only plug into the network inside your home.
Was a crime committed over your WiFi? Then you can be held liable: This way you keep your internet connection safe from strangers.
The cheapest subscription formulas
Whether you always surf via the WiFi network, via the wired network, or both: it makes no difference to your internet subscription. The specifications of each subscription therefore apply to both your WiFi and Ethernet connection. But for those who are always at home or working, mobile data plays less of a role. In that case, you can go for unlimited home internet and high speeds, without having to think about the rest.
An internet subscription with speeds of up to 200 Mbps or higher will go a long way. We currently find the best deal – the fastest internet for the lowest possible price – at Mobile Vikings, according to a comparison via Independer.be. A fiber subscription will cost you 55 euros per month and delivers speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps. In second place is Zen Fiber from Orange (400 Mbps for 61 euros per month). Your home must have a fiber connection.
Is that fiber connection not available, but do you still want the fastest internet option? Then Telenet appears to have the best offer. All-Internet gives you 300 Mbps for 61.14 euros per month. If we look further, we already end up in the category with speeds up to 150 Mbps. Home internet from Orange will cost you 50 euros per month, including a mobile subscription with 150 calling minutes and 4 GB mobile data.
