Kottayam ∙ The ward member has given ‘work’ in cash to KSEB, which cuts off electricity more than twenty times a day. The protest was made by counting the bills of ten thousand rupees which is the electricity bill of nine houses by the employees. C. Ranjith, a BJP member of Randallumood ward of Ekallam Talavoor gram panchayat, came forward with a separate protest.
The incident took place at the KSEB Patazhi section office yesterday. Yesterday was the last day of electricity disconnection for non-payers in the region. The money was paid directly with the bill of nine houses. The amount of each bill was placed in separate envelopes and tied in a bag. The employees sat together and counted the coins. Ranjith told the employees that if the power cut continues, the bills of all the houses in the ward will be converted into coins.
Ranjith told Manorama Online that the action was in protest against the increase in electricity rates and power cuts. “Time is not a power cut. Electricity goes off more than twenty times a day. Five minutes will come and fifteen minutes will go. Sometimes there is power for an hour and it goes out for five minutes. It goes on like this. Due to this, electronic devices in many homes are breaking down. This has been going on for a long time. Complaints are always made to the Panchayat Commission. They say that the electricity is going because of the trees here. However, they don’t exactly touch.
Electricity bills of nine households were paid. It was about ten thousand rupees. 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees were the coins. Ranjith added that the money was taken from the houses and sold from the temple. When asked why such a method of protest was used, he said that it is not the public that should be troubled but the concerned department.
“We should not trouble the public. If it is a problem in the panchayat then that department should be bothered. If the protest is on the road, people will be inconvenienced. Not interested in roadblocks. When the coin was handed over, it was as if the staff had been stung in the face. It is not Indian rupees, you can’t say they won’t accept it, it was given in the afternoon, they sat and counted it till 5 pm’ – said Ranjith.
