Jakarta (ANTARA) – The US Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has revealed the reasons for its plan not to contact its robot explorer on the planet Mars for the next two weeks.
Apparently this is caused by a phenomenon called solar conjunction, a moment when Earth and Mars are on opposite sides of the sun.
In Engadget’s report, Monday, due to this phenomenon, NASA’s Mars rover robot, also known as NASA’s Mars Rover, will not communicate with parties on Earth for the next two weeks.
In more detail, solar conjunction indicates that the Sun, Earth and Mars are in a parallel position. However, the positions of Earth and Mars are on opposite sides of the Sun.
NASA emphasizes that it is very risky if it sends communications or instructions to its exploration robots on Mars because interference from the sun could have detrimental effects.
Therefore, to prevent this problem, NASA took a break to give instructions or communicate with its robots until the planets moved to a more suitable position.
The pause apparently started on Saturday (11/11) local time and will last until November 25, 2023.
The solar conjunction phenomenon on Mars occurs once every two years, at that moment NASA robots can still send basic information to NASA on Earth but cannot provide voice messages, especially when the Sun completely covers Mars.
Within two weeks, NASA’s Mars exploration robots, namely Preseverance and Curiousity, including other devices such as the Ingenuity helicopter, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Odyssey orbiter and MAVEN will continue to explore Mars and collect data according to their capacity.
However, this data will only be stored and will not be sent to Earth until the solar conjunction phenomenon ends.
