Meeting with Education Officials: Advocating for Linguistic Rights in the Valencian Community

The “good disposition” demonstrated yesterday by the regional secretary of Education, Daniel McEvoy, and the undersecretary, Laura Navarro Guerola, in the meeting they held yesterday with the Escuela de Todos Association (EdT), with the participation of Teachers for Linguistic Freedom “It is a first step, but not enough,” said sources from both organizations. “Because they do not guarantee the linguistic rights of the citizens of the Valencian Community included in the Constitution and the Statute of Autonomy,” they stated.

From the Association they proposed to the Ministry the return to the double linguistic route of lines in Valencian and Spanish according to the parents’ preferences. But from Education they were told that at the moment they are not considering that scenario (the one prior to the Multilingualism Law approved by the Botanical government of Ximo Puig and Mónica Oltra).

“We know that there are inconveniences, because this double line requires a greater degree of organization and budget, but we believe that It would be the best way to guarantee the rights of choice of the vehicular language by parents“said Miguel Ángel Robles. However, Education did not tell them what the new system will be once the Botanical Law is repealed.

Ana Losada (national spokesperson for EdT), José Tomas Pastor and Miguel Ángel Robles (Teachers for Linguistic Freedom), presented their proposals for the future Linguistic Regime Law. Which begin with “g“guarantee the vehicularity of Spanish throughout the Valencian Community” and the “bilingual communications (Valencian and Spanish) of educational centers with families.”

However, if they received a response to their proposal to repeal order 4/2021 of March 16, of the Department of Innovation and Universities which requires exempt students to take the Valencian language test at the PAU starting in 2027.

Furthermore, they asked for repeal of the language requirement for access to public administration “for that knowledge of Valencian is a merit and never an obstaclefor the labor mobility of citizens.” As well as favoring “the return of civil servants who are working in other autonomous communities, through a transfer competition, due to the requirement of the Valencian title when this is not necessary for the exercise of his teaching”.

Unlike the new autonomous government, EdT considers that the return to the double track throughout the territory would allow that “the linguistic preferences of families are one of the fundamental axes of the Conselleria’s action of Education. Knowing which language or languages families want is essential to adapt the supply to real demand.”

Finally, the members of EdT have proposed to the Secretary of Education a joint action with other communities, governed by the PP, that would allow them to begin unify evaluation criteria between them. “This is the case of the selectivity test where the correction criteria and contents evaluated are different. The inequality of the PAU tests, denounced during the 1st EdT Conference, violates the rights of students who access a single university district with different tests”.
