US Treasury Department Notice on 100 Suspected Ships Violating Sanctions Against Russian Oil

The US Treasury Department has sent a notice to ship management companies requesting information on 100 ships suspected of violating Western sanctions against Russian oil, sources told Reuters, cited by BTA.

The notice, which the Office of Foreign Assets Control sent on Friday to ship management companies in about 30 countries, is the most sweeping U.S. move since Washington and its allies imposed price restrictions on Moscow aimed at reducing oil revenues for to punish its aggression against Ukraine. The Ministry of Finance does not comment on this information.

A Treasury spokesman said: “We will not confirm or comment on investigations or sanctions measures, but the Treasury is committed to imposing price restrictions and reducing funding for Russia’s war on Ukraine.”

The Group of Seven (G7), the European Union (EU) and Australia imposed a $60-a-barrel cap on Russian oil exports by sea in December last year.

Western companies were barred from providing transportation, insurance, financial and other services for crude oil sold above this limit. Movements in global oil prices this year mean that much of Russian crude is trading above the limit.

But U.S. officials said the cap still imposes additional costs on Russia, forcing it to rely on a “ghost fleet” of older tankers, longer voyages and non-Western maritime services, reducing the revenue Russia can spend. for war.
