“Because currently vaccines are very limited and quite expensive, it is best to avoid risky sexual practices, especially if you know that your sexual partner has symptoms of mpox, don’t have sex and immediately isolate yourself,” said Head of the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Communications and Information Bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, when contacted by ANTARA. in Jakarta, Monday (13/11/2023).
He explained that the risk group in question is people who have sex with multiple partners and have multiple partners and have same-sex sex. Generally, he said, cases of monkey pox occur due to same-sex sexual relations.
He said that if people see or feel symptoms of mpox, they can immediately isolate themselves. Apart from that, people who are at risk should immediately get vaccinated.
“If we have symptoms of mpox, immediately report to a health facility and isolate. Those at risk need to get vaccinated immediately,” he said.
He also said that monkey pox could spread to other provinces because it is an infectious disease, but people do not need to worry because mpox spreads very slowly compared to Covid-19.
“This disease spreads very slowly compared to Covid-19 because it is transmitted through direct contact or indirect contact,” he said.
The Ministry of Health noted that as of Friday (10/11/2023) mpox cases in Indonesia had increased to 42 cases spread across the provinces of DKI Jakarta, Banten and West Java. Data from the Ministry of Health reports that confirmed cases of mpox are generally experienced by same-sex sexually oriented community groups consisting of men with comorbid conditions of HIV and syphilis.
Symptoms of monkey pox usually begin with a headache, followed by a fever of more than 38 degrees Celsius and sore throat and enlarged lymph nodes, followed by the appearance of a rash after one or three days.
The appearance of the rash is in the form of a small red rash, spread regionally, meaning for example in the arm area, then in the genital area, legs and others.
These symptoms are different from chicken pox which is usually characterized by fever of up to 39 degrees Celsius, then the rash that appears at one time can have many manifestations, namely redness, nodules, elasticity, and this can occur in various phases.
The Ministry of Health also provided 4,500 doses mpox vaccine as well as 1,008 bottles of the antiviral tecovirimat, as a patient treatment effort which is predicted to be available in the fourth week of November 2023.
