The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo has officially presented the new minivan EM90, which is basically the same Zeekr 009, only more expensive and with weaker technical indicators.
Those who follow the news will know that when developing its first minivan, Volvo relied on the facilities of its Swedish owners, Zeekr, a sub-brand of the Chinese concern Geely. As a result, the Volvo EM90 has identical body side panels, similar dimensions and will also be produced in the same factory.
A distinct look is achieved using Volvo-specific optics, aerodynamic elements and front grille design, while under the hood of the EM90 is a single 272 hp (343 Nm) electric motor that spins the wheels of the rear axle and can provide acceleration to a hundred in 8.3 seconds. For comparison, the Zeekr 009 is equipped with two e-motors, the total power of which is 544 hp (686 Nm) allowing to reach 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.
Similarly with range: the Volvo is powered by a 116kW battery for around 738km, the Zeekr can rely on a 140kW cell that promises around 822km (by CLTC).
The manufacturer informs that charging the battery from 30 to 80 percent will take 30 minutes, in addition, the EM90 is endowed with a function that, if necessary, allows the energy to be transferred to another e-vehicle, electric scooter, bicycle or any smaller consumer.
The EM90 package includes an active noise reduction system, a 15.6-inch screen, two-chamber pneumatic suspension, tires with a reduced noise level, “club chairs” of the second row of seats with massage, ventilation, heating, a separate climate zone, pull-out tables, and other comfort options. To this can be added a panoramic roof, a virtual instrument panel, wireless charging for a smartphone, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 21 speakers and a projection screen. By the way, all this is also offered by Zeekr.
The most unpleasant surprise for the buyer can be the price. The Volvo EM90 will cost 818,000 yuan (nearly €105,000) in China, while the Zeekr 009 is offered for 499,000 yuan (around €64,000), remaining significantly cheaper than the EM90 even in the most luxurious version (588,000 yuan-€75,500).
The main market for the Volvo EM90 is Asia, but the Swedish brand does not rule out the possibility that their minivan could also appear in Europe and the United States. In this case, there will be no competition for the EM90 from the Chinese partner, as the Zeekr 009 is not planned for the European market.
