Statements from Israeli officials in the Mossad intelligence service sparked anger in Brazil, after Israel confirmed its participation in thwarting an attack planned by the Lebanese Hezbollah in the South American country.
Last Wednesday, the Brazilian police carried out a large-scale operation in three states, in order to “stop preparations related to terrorism.”
As part of the operation, two people with Brazilian nationality were arrested, and about 10 addresses were searched.
The Mossad said that it had contributed, through the Brazilian investigation, to “thwarting an attack planned by a terrorist cell affiliated with Hezbollah in Brazil,” expecting its targets to be sites linked to the Jewish community.
But these statements angered the Brazilian side, as Justice Minister Flavio Dino accused the Israeli agencies of “desiring to anticipate the results of the investigation for political propaganda purposes.”
On Friday, the two arrested defendants denied, during their first session before the judge, any involvement in “terrorist” plans, and described the accusations against them as “ridiculous.”
In the same context, the Brazilian Federal Police announced, on Monday, that they had arrested a third person as part of an investigation into preparations for “terrorist” attacks organized, according to Israel, by Hezbollah.
“On Sunday, another suspect targeted by the investigation was arrested in Rio de Janeiro,” police said in a statement.
Hezbollah has entered into the war between Israel and Hamas for weeks, as the border between Lebanon and the Israeli army witnesses an exchange of shells and missiles on an almost daily basis.
