800 jobs will be cut at the Tata Steel steel factory in IJmuiden. The layoffs mainly occur in management, staff and support functions. “There is emphatically no intervention in shift work,” a spokesperson emphasizes.
Tata Steel says that “major measures” are needed to remain competitive in the steel market and make the transition to sustainability. The company in IJmuiden employs 9,000 people, 5,400 of whom do not work in steel production shifts.
In the announced job reduction, approximately 500 office jobs of employees employed by Tata must disappear. The remaining 300 jobs that will disappear are filled by temporary workers or are still open. According to a spokesperson, this concerns just over 9 percent of the office functions.
According to Tata Steel, forced redundancies cannot be ruled out. The company also still has to discuss a social plan with the unions.
Tata states that the efforts that have already been made to improve its own market position and reduce costs have not proven to be sufficient. “More is needed. And so the company must also further reduce personnel costs.” According to Tata, this is also “in the interest of the transformation to a cleaner, greener and more circular steel company”, in which the company wants to invest.
However, Tata emphasizes that the round of layoffs does not mean a complete hiring freeze. “The need for technically trained people, for example in production, remains.”
