Japanese YouTuber Arrested for Defamation – Metropolitan Police Investigation

On the 13th, the Metropolitan Police Department’s Life Safety Special Investigation Team arrested Kazuaki Sugita (40), occupation unknown, from Musashino City, Tokyo, on suspicion of defamation of a woman on the video posting site YouTube. .

Suspect Sugita, who calls himself “Rengoku Koroaki” as a YouTuber, records videos of people on the street being detained as suspicious people, calling them “arresting private individuals,” and posting them on social networking sites (SNS). He reportedly posted multiple videos.

The arrest alleges that on September 19th, an 18-year-old woman who was near the Imperial Theater in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, was accused of behavior that made her suspect of “daddy-hunting,” receiving money and goods from men in exchange for dates, and of illegally reselling tickets. While doing so, he allegedly recorded a video on his smartphone and posted it on YouTube without any mosaic effects on his face. It has not been made clear whether or not she approved.

According to the squad, the woman was just meeting up with a friend, and there was no evidence of her being a daddy or illegally reselling the product. She approached the Metropolitan Police Department and asked for the video to be deleted.

Since the beginning of this year, there have been a number of posts on social media calling themselves “arrests of private individuals,” which appear to be aimed at increasing the number of views and generating advertising revenue, and concerns have been raised about personal sanctions and invasion of privacy. Under the Criminal Procedure Code, in principle, private individuals who are not police officers can be arrested without an arrest warrant only when they are caught red-handed.
