The European Commission recommended the start of negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. The issue is to be discussed by the 27 member states at the next summit in Brussels on December 14-15. However, there are two countries that can be a serious obstacle to Ukraine joining the union, writes Obozrevatel.
Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine has fulfilled 90% of the reforms expected of it by the EU. However, Poland and Hungary have claims to Kiev. They can really complicate the negotiation process. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has generally stated that the European Union should not even start negotiations with Ukraine, making the situation even more threatening.
The Parliamentary Commission for Ukraine’s EU Integration recognized that the position of Poland and Hungary could be a serious obstacle to Ukraine’s further progress towards the EU.
Poland announced that until Ukraine solves the issue of exhuming the remains of the victims of the Volyn massacre, until then “it makes no sense for Kyiv to dream of joining the EU.” The massacre in World War II is one of the historical issues that seriously divides Warsaw and Kiev.
Warsaw did not make clear whether the exhumation was a condition for Poland’s support for Ukraine’s EU accession, but only added that this issue must be resolved. But not only historical wounds worry today’s Poland in its relations with Ukraine. The euphoria of multilateral aid at the beginning of the invasion gradually took a more pragmatic direction. This led to restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural products that were initiated by a number of neighboring countries, including Poland. Grain exports are also among the issues on which there is much disagreement.
Regarding Hungary, for quite a long time, the Hungarian Prime Minister has been repeating Russian propaganda narratives about a full-scale invasion of Russia, refusal of aid to Ukraine, demonstratively maintaining warm relations with the Kremlin, while under various pretexts opposing EU aid to Kiev and the accession of Ukraine in NATO. Orbán’s government is threatening to veto the next EU summit in December. The reason is that the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine are allegedly violated because of the adopted language law, which obliges minorities, not only Hungarian, to receive at least 70% of their education in the Ukrainian language.
The European Union fears that the Orbán government will take an intransigent position on the issue and that it will be almost impossible to overcome the veto. Foreign Minister Szijjártó, like Orbán, accused Ukraine of “violating the principles of the European Union regarding national minorities”.
The Ukrainian edition writes that it is possible to negotiate with Poland, but it will be very difficult with Hungary.
