The African Development Bank has decided to lift all sanctions imposed on Gabon following the coup d’état of August 30, 2023.
The news was given by the Minister of the Economy Mays Mouissi on Thursday November 9, 2023. Indeed, this decision comes at the end of the discussions initiated at the beginning of October, in Marrakech, Morocco where the ADB is organizing the 2023 edition of the Africa Investment Forum. The discussions took place between senior executive officials of the AfDB and a delegation from the Gabonese Transitional Government, including the Prime Minister, Raymond Ndond Sima, the Minister of Economy and Participations, Mays Mouissi and the Minister of Public Accounts, Charles M’ba.
By lifting its sanctions against Gabon, the AfDB becomes the first international institution to lift its sanctions against Gabon. According to a source within the financial institution, cited by Gabonreview which indicates that an internal memorandum, Gabon is no longer subject to the financial restrictions decided in October 2023 after the non-repayment of loans.
Remember that in Gabon, the ADB is financing a gigantic drinking water supply project to the tune of 75 billion FCFA in the country’s main cities, including Libreville, the capital.
