British Prime Minister Sunak has fired Home Secretary Braverman. She had come under fire after criticizing police actions at pro-Palestine demonstrations in an op-ed.

The minister accused the police in the newspaper piece on Wednesday of applying a double standard. “Right-wing and nationalist demonstrators who are guilty of aggression are rightly dealt with severely,” she wrote. “But pro-Palestinian mobs that exhibit much the same behavior are largely left alone, even when they are clearly breaking the law.”

The article appeared a few days before a major pro-Palestinian demonstration in London. Braverman was accused, among other things, of stoking the fire with the publication.

According to British media, Sunak also distanced himself from the opinion piece, which has now resulted in Braverman’s resignation. In a short statement she calls her ministership “the greatest privilege of my life”. She will delve deeper into the matter soon, she says. Braverman was minister for more than a year.

David Cameron’s return?

British media expect Braverman’s resignation to be part of more changes in Sunak’s cabinet. Braverman himself would be replaced by the current Secretary of State, James Cleverly.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron was also spotted at Sunak’s office this morning, leading to intense speculation about his return to politics. Cameron was prime minister between 2010 and 2016 and has largely stayed away from politics since then.
