Bludesch The 28-year-old Bludesch young doctor Vincent Müller won the European championship title with the Austrian national team in American football against Finland on October 28th in St. Pölten. The title went to Austria for the first time after participating in the finals in 2014 and 2018. The final was reached after preliminary round victories against France, Hungary and in the semi-final against Italy. Vincent, who played on special teams and defense, considers good preparation, unconditional determination and unique team spirit to be the basis of an outstanding defensive performance and a strong offense. This was necessary in order to achieve success against the highly rated Finnish team. But how do you get into American football as a Vorarlberg native when football is the number one sport in the region? Vincent Müller says: “I stopped playing football when I was 14. After we went to a football game in Hohenems, I was fascinated by the armor and the fighting spirit.” As in football, eleven players fight on the field, each with a different task. Football is an absolute team sport. Mutual support and trust are crucial for success and, unlike football, there are no prima donnas. In 2013 he played and won as an offensive player with the junior national team in Germany at the European Championships. As a sports soldier, he took part in the Junior World Championships in Kuwait in 2014, where the team unfortunately missed out on the bronze medal. Due to his medical studies, he moved to Innsbruck to the SWARCO RAIDERS in 2014. They are a very professionally managed and trained American football team and bring up to 5,000 spectators to the stadium for home games. For Vincent, American football was an ideal and intensive balance to his studies. In 2019, after the fourth championship title with the Raiders, he had actually already ended his national and international career, but started a comeback in 2021, won the 2021 championship with his club, i.e. his fifth championship title, and played the last two seasons as a defensive player (defensive Back) in a European league format – the ELF. The European championship title was the absolute highlight. The successful footballer is currently working as a rotating doctor at the LKH Bludenz and Feldkirch and would then like to complete training as a specialist in trauma surgery and orthopedics. “The special camaraderie in the team, the psychological and physical intensity make this sport unique for me. The fairness of the fans towards one another is also special. There are no hooligans,” said Müller. It is still unclear for him whether the European title will conclude his career. HAVE
