Welcome, Anaruk – Polish proposal prevails in election for the name of the World Cup mascot
No World Cup without a mascot – of course this also applies to the Dryland Sled Dog World Championships 2023! The mascot itself was quickly found – a cuddly plush dog, although scholars are still arguing about whether it was a small Siberian Husky, a Malamute or perhaps a Greenlander puppy… Definitely But he is an unmistakably Nordic sled dog – and therefore exactly what the World Championships in Mühlberg at the beginning of December are all about. And because the little one is still far too young to be harnessed to the training car, bike or scooter, he wears a stylish neckerchief with the World Cup logo instead of a harness.
The only thing he was missing was a name. And who knows sled dog names better than the mushers themselves? That’s why the World Cup organizers from the SSCT first collected name suggestions on social media and then chose the winning suggestion in an open vote lasting several days.
In the end, out of a whopping 56(!) name suggestions (from “Mühli” to “Kevin” to “Woof Woof”), the name “Anaruk” came out on top – submitted by the Polish musher Małgorzata Kita, who lives in Mühlberg with Alaskan malamutes the 6-dog class will start. When asked about her name suggestion, she explains that “Anaruk” is simply the name of her lead dog, whom she wanted to honor in a very special way.
He will then be particularly happy about the prize that his owner will receive for her winning name suggestion: a surprise package of food and treats from the program of the main World Cup sponsor. And of course a very personal copy of mascot Anaruk. Everyone else – participants and spectators alike – can secure their Anaruk at the merchandising stand during the World Cup days.
