Amman – Scientists at the European Union’s Copernicus Observatory on Climate Change expect that the current year 2023 will be the hottest in 125,000 years.

According to scientists, climate change is exacerbating extremely destructive weather phenomena, and these phenomena this year included:

– Floods that claimed the lives of thousands of people in Libya.

– Severe heat waves in South America.

– The forest fires that Canada witnessed, which is the worst season ever.

The observatory stated that last month broke the previous temperature record recorded during October since 2019 by a large margin, and the previous record was set in 2016, which witnessed another “El Niño” phenomenon.

For her part, Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the observatory, described the temperature imbalance in October as “very severe,” and said, “The record was broken by 0.4 degrees Celsius, which is a big difference.”

At the global level, the average air temperature on the Earth’s surface in October was 1.7 degrees Celsius higher than in the same month during the period from 1850 to 1900, which the observatory defines as the pre-industrial period.

The European Union’s Copernicus Observatory reported that rising temperatures occur for several reasons, the most prominent of which are:

• Continuing greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activity.

• The “El Niño” phenomenon will occur this year, which will lead to an increase in the surface temperature of the waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The Copernicus Observatory began recording data in 1940, and Burgess noted that when we compare our data with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we can say that this is the warmest year in the past 125,000 years.

The long-term data from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change includes readings from sources such as ice cores, tree rings and coral reefs.

The observatory pointed out that the only time temperatures exceeded the record average by such a large difference before October was in the previous month, September.

For his part, Piers Forster, a climate scientist at the University of Leeds, stressed that we must not allow the devastating floods, forest fires, storms and heat waves that we witnessed this year to be the new normal.

He added that by rapidly reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade, we can halve the rate of temperature rise.

Forster pointed out that although the majority of countries are setting increasingly ambitious goals to gradually reduce emissions, this has not happened yet, and global carbon dioxide emissions reached a record level in 2022.
