Innovative Skin Cream with Synthetic Melanin Developed by Scientists at Northwestern University

Scientists at Northwestern University in the US have developed an innovative skin cream designed to heal damage caused by sun exposure or environmental toxins.

This cream contains synthetic melanin, which mimics the natural melanin in human skin and speeds up the healing process when applied to affected areas. The beneficial effects are not limited to the skin, but also include a calming of the immune system.

Biomimetic synthetic melanin, when used in cream form, provides effective protection against sun exposure and helps heal skin affected by sun or chemical burns.

The mechanism of action consists in the elimination of free radicals, produced as a result of skin damage, such as those caused by sunburn. This is crucial because free radicals can cause cellular damage, accelerating the skin’s aging process and increasing the risk of skin cancer.

The research team published the study results in the journal npj Regenerative Medicine on November 2. Melanin, naturally present in humans and animals, provides the pigmentation of the skin, eyes and hair and serves to protect cells from damage caused by solar radiation and environmental pollution.

The synthetic melanin developed by the researchers was designed to have an increased ability to scavenge free radicals. It behaves like a “super melanin”, being biocompatible, degradable, non-toxic and transparent when applied to the skin. Studies show that it works effectively, eliminating harmful factors and protecting the skin.

Potential applications of synthetic melanin include use in sunscreens for better protection against solar radiation and in moisturizers to promote ongoing skin healing. Researchers anticipate using this cream to treat blisters and open wounds.

Synthetic melanin also appears to have a beneficial impact at a systemic level, calming the immune system by absorbing free radicals after skin injury. This may be an important development in the development of treatments for skin burns caused by radiation exposure, thus providing treatment options for cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.
