The New York Police are searching for a group of thieves who, with hammer in hand to break windows, broke into a Manhattan gallery and stole a painting valued at $100,000.
“Eve” is the name of the stolen work of art, and it was painted by Marc Chagall, one of the great masters of the 20th century, along with Picasso and John Miró, Charles Saffati, owner of Carlton Fine Arts, told local media.
Public security cameras captured the moment when the thieves arrived at 55th Street, in midtown Manhattan, and one of them took out the hammer to break the entrance glass.
“He came in here, he took the piece out of this easel, a Chagall, it’s a $100,000 piece,” the gallery’s mourning detailed.
The thieves fled with the painting in a car
A security camera installed on Madison Avenue captured the moment the thieves fled with the painting in hand.
According to authorities and detectives, they put the paint in the back seat of a 1996 Honda Accord. The vehicle has damage to the passenger side and a rear tire is missing a hubcap.
The owner of the gallery also stated that they turned around at 57th Street.
The NYPD’s Major Case Team is investigating the crime.
